Dentures or dental implants: Which is better?

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons reports that close to 70% of adults aged between 35 and 44 years in the U.S have at least one of their teeth missing as a result of an accident, gum disease, dental fracture or tooth decay. If you are a part of one of these statistics, you do not have to worry as there are solutions to the problem. Today we have some good alternatives to missing teeth. Dentures and dental implants are just the two best options. It is certainly difficult to choose between these two, and you should certainly consult atleast 2-3 good dentist to decide the best option for you.

Dentures

Dentures are false teeth. These are suitable for people with unhealthy jaw or gums. Their main disadvantage is that they aren’t ideal for everyone. They require to be secured using denture adhesive to avoid slipping out when speaking or eating which can be embarrassing. Partial dentures can even promote decay and infection in other teeth if they aren’t fitted properly. This may increase the need for a tooth filling to be done on the adjoining tooth.

Dental implants

If you have a missing tooth and your jaw and gums are healthy, dental implants are the most suitable option for you. These involve implanting replacement teeth, surgically, into the jawbone. The main advantage of the dental implant is that, with good oral hygiene, they can last for up to 20 years. Dental implants are preferred by individuals with one or two missing teeth. Cost of dentures vs. dental implants

Dentures offers a more affordable solution as compared to dental implants. This makes them a preferred choice. However, this is a myth, especially, since dentures come with additional costs of cleaning solutions, fixatives and denture replacement. This is on top of other disadvantages such as discomfort, slippage or even pain.

Why dental implants provide a better solution

Dental implants are a better solution for missing teeth than dentures. In fact, they are the current solution to missing teeth. This is because unlike the dentures which offer a façade of teeth, they act as an actual replacement for the missing teeth. Dental implants are secured to the jaw or gum where they act as an anchor to the dental crown. If well placed, they do not move or slip and this removes the discomfort and embarrassment associated with the dentures.

Dental implants also offer a more permanent solution to tooth loss. They require less maintenance as compared to the other tooth replacement methods as they do not need removal or special cleaning. Dental implants also function and look like the normal teeth. They require the same care as the natural teeth.

Another key advantage of dental implants is that they are able to preserve the bone in a better way. Since they are anchored to the jaw and get integrated with the jawbone, they act as a replacement for the missing tooth root. This prevents the deterioration of the bone and gum, which can lead to a recession of the jawbone as well as facial collapse.

Therefore, it is clear that dental implants provide a better alternative to dentures for missing teeth. They also provide a solution that is quite close to the natural teeth.
