Save your tooth and keep your smile healthy with Aesthetic Family Dentistry
It’s been a long time since root canals have been the painful, uncomfortable experience that people tend to associate with the procedure. The truth is that having a root canal treatment is no more painful – and in fact, is not painful – than have a cavity filled in a tooth.
Patients tend to be nervous about having a root canal procedure done on their teeth because of the stories they have heard, but at Aesthetic Family Dentistry, we ensure your comfort throughout the procedure and you’ll swear you didn’t feel a thing.
What is a Root Canal?
A root canal treatment is needed when a patient’s tooth has experienced exposure of the root or pulp in some way. Usually, decay from an untreated cavity makes its way to the inside of a tooth and causes further damage. This area is often infected, and severe pain may be involved. Inside of our teeth, there is a lot going on. When an element of our tooth becomes exposed, a root canal will help ensure that the infection and damage doesn’t spread to other areas of your tooth, other teeth, or your gums.
By removing the infection through the root canal procedure, you are less likely to experience ongoing pain, further damage, and you may be able to save your tooth. The goal of any root canal procedure is to ensure the longevity of the tooth. Whenever possible, our dentists work to save your natural teeth because missing teeth can bring with them another set of problems. Solving the problem is our main focus.
What are the Benefits of a Root Canal?
Despite their bad reputation, root canals save teeth. When caught early enough, there is no need to extract the tooth. A root canal ensures that the infection is removed and that your teeth remain healthy. Infections can spread like wildfire and it’s important to treat the problem before it gets worse. Not only does a root canal procedure help reduce the likelihood of the spread of infection, but this treatment also puts a stop to the pain you are having.
Pain is always the first sign something is wrong when we can’t see inside of our teeth. If you experience pain, call our office and talk to our staff about setting up an examination to determine if you need a root canal. Other benefits include saving your tooth, but also, ensuring the infection is contained and dealt with.
Pain is very distracting, and it can be difficult to carry on with your day-to-day life when you are in such pain. Redness, swelling, and even pus may be present prior to treatment, but once you have a root canal completed, you’ll feel much better.
What is the Treatment Process Like?
For many patients, the process is as quick and easy as having a cavity filled. Our dentist will use a special tool to drill a hole in the top of your teeth to clean out the infection. Once the infection is removed, the tooth will be filled with a cement product that is safe to use in the dental industry. The final step is to place a crown over the tooth to keep the tooth intact, now that much of the inside of the tooth has been removed.
On the outside, your teeth will look beautiful. On the inside, your teeth will be strong and healthy. Crowns can, from time to time, become damaged and may need to be replaced over the years. If you have a crown that is currently covering a previous root canal treatment and it has become damaged, call our office to book an appointment to have it repaired or replaced.
What Can You Expect Following a Root Canal in Phoneix, AZ?
Following your procedure, you may experience some numbness in the area of the tooth that was worked on. After the local anesthetic wears off, you may experience some pain and discomfort; however, this discomfort is not so intense that over-the-counter pain medication wouldn’t make you feel better.
If pain persists or you experience any other issues, contact our office for a follow-up appointment. Within a day, you’ll be back to your regular routine and glad you had the root canal treatment done in the first place.
