Sedation options for patients I think are definitely customized and individualized. You know, we do a lot of things just on our own as far as, you know, pillows and blankets and we have TVs for distraction they can watch during any procedures. You know, we use laughing gas is probably the most easy and the most reversible thing that can be done and that is any age can use that.
Takes the edge off, kind of like having a glass of wine or something comforting like that. We also do, you know, a pill ahead of time that can not completely put you under but definitely, you know, minimize what you’re aware of and just make the procedure go more quickly and especially larger, more reconstructive or cosmetic cases that tends to be the best option to help patients just, you know, not overthink about things. Most people probably had something like it over their time.
I mean, whether it be a little Valium or various other things that, again, it doesn’t, you’re still in control, you still are aware what’s going on, it just kind of eases the mind a little bit, lets the time pass more quickly, definitely lets anesthetic work better, all those kind of things and, you know, we monitor their blood pressure and their oxygen levels and all those things throughout that. Any age could be a good candidate for dental sedation. Younger kids, we tend to lean more toward the laughing gas but we have a lot of older adult patients that have either used that for a long time or we’ve introduced it to them and it just helps procedures seem to be more quickly and more streamlined.
So, really just about anybody can be a candidate for it. We approach sedation safely and thoughtfully by monitoring blood pressure, oxygen levels and doing a really thorough background check on their medical history, any medicines they may be on, any reactions they’ve ever had to any medicines, any allergies and things like that. Fear is probably the number one obstacle, I think, to dentistry.
So, sedation kind of quiets that part of the brain that lets fear take over. So, therefore, they’re not as nervous certainly but everything works better. Anesthetic works better, we can be more efficient, we can do more at one visit.
So, it overall helps greatly with people that have really high fear.
